This point-to-point adventure winds through lush native bush, across swing bridges, and along clifftops with sweeping lake and mountain views.
With its flowing single track, varied terrain, and a perfect balance of challenge and reward, The Taniwha is a celebration of off-road exploration at its best.

21km Taniwha Trail Run/Walk
From the historic riverside town of Mangakino, this course takes you through some of the Waikato River Trails’ very best sections. Run rolling gravel tracks past farmland and friendly cows, cross sparkling swing bridges, and soak in uninterrupted views of Lake Maraetai.
After crossing Whakamaru Dam, follow winding lakeside single track through native bush and peaceful reserves before finishing at the stunning Whakamaru Christian Camp, surrounded by crystal-clear waters.

16km Taniwha Trail Run/Walk
Starting just outside Atiamuri, this flowing lakeside trail weaves through native bush, pine forest, and grassy river flats, with no big hills to slow you down.
Take in sweeping views of Lake Whakamaru and its dramatic banks before cruising into scenic reserves. Your journey ends at the beautiful Whakamaru Christian Camp — an island finish like no other.

7km Taniwha Trail Run/Walk
Perfect for a shorter challenge, this southern lakeside route starts at Tram Road Reserve and follows a smooth gravel trail through bush, forest, and river flats.
Enjoy constant views of Lake Whakamaru and towering cliffs before finishing at the magical Whakamaru Christian Camp, perched on its own island. Buggy friendly and family-friendly.
